Immunization Requirements for Students Entering 7th Grade
Immunization requirements for entry into school in the state of Ohio have changed. Effective in the fall of 2010, all 7th graders were REQUIRED to have a Tdap booster vaccine. Tdap protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). This means that prior to starting school in the 2013-2014 school year your current 6th grader will need to get a Tdap booster before he/she can start 7th grade. This change affected all public schools in the state of Ohio.
In addition to the required vaccines, it is recommended that all students receive a meningococcal vaccine (Menactra) between 11 and 18 years of age and start their Hepatitis A series. Another vaccine that is being encouraged is the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) for females beginning at age 11. This is a series of 3 vaccines. The HPV vaccine was also recently approved for use in males ages 9 through 18 years.
